A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
