The Trump phenomenon's most telling and defining moments – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of multiple weeks, the nation's leader started showing all observers his intentions for a gilded ballroom twice the size than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing to build it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to USAID stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently a study projected his petroleum strategies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked – really, no other president would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with the government.
We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the world' toward 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As confusing as it is to witness the chief executive seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Essentially, they turned a figure of compassion into a figure of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is emphatically absolutely not the narrative of a powerful ruler emerging; instead, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to escape covert authorities. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message is about love for fellow humans, especially for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a way to instruct the attacker; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your coat you ought to provide the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and direct reality that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a kind of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
So I have been encouraged to observe the persistent defiance to Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags throughout each rally and calls to the finest aspects of American history.
We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or not?
The nation is most protected, essentially, through connection to the best within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it distinctive and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Christ. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most negative about the nation and Christian faith was nonexistent; it means both humility and faith, a mixture that committed national faithful ought to accept.
