This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
