Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a stake approximately five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who each also own one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Increase

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos Group acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and has grossed over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the most successful sports film to date.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is fourth in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a unprecedented eight consecutive team titles and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
